FROM FLOOR PLANS TO FLOW PLANS: HOW I'VE USED SYSTEMS THINKING TO DESIGN SPACES

There’s a quiet joy I find in designing spaces. Not the extravagant kind that needs mood boards or Pinterest pegs—but something far more structural, almost therapeutic. I like starting with a blank canvas, sketching wireframe-style layouts, and visualizing how people, energy, and ideas will flow through a space.

This isn’t just a hobby. It’s a way of thinking that goes back to my engineering days at BITS Pilani. My favorite subject was Systems Engineering—a field that taught me to see every functioning entity as a system with interlinked parts. Over time, I’ve applied that thinking far beyond machines or business processes. I’ve come to see physical spaces—especially workspaces—as systems too. And that shift has been powerful.

Let me show you what I mean.


The Blank Canvas: A Raw Space Waiting to be Structured

What you see here is the raw shell of the Spring Soul office, just before we moved in. At first glance, it's a basic, undecorated floor. But to me, it was a system-in-waiting—a puzzle I was eager to solve.

Instead of hiring an interior designer or setting aside a large budget for civil work, I took a marker and chalk, mapped out zones directly on the floor, and started “modelling” the office in real life—just like we did with mechanical systems in college.

Modelling the Workspace Like a System

Each element in the space had a function, just like a component in an engineering model:

  • Cabins and cubicles acted as nodes of focused work and collaboration.
  • Movement corridors were like process pathways, designed to ensure uninterrupted flow without congestion.
  • Natural light was optimized as a resource—something systems engineers always account for.
  • Reused partitions and furniture were components from an old setup, now reconfigured to fit a new system layout.

We didn’t discard a thing. Every panel, desk, and fitting from our previous office was repurposed and integrated into this new setup. The outcome? A fully functional, aesthetic, and efficient office created at minimal cost—and zero waste.


When Everything is a System—From Brands to Blueprints

This structured approach isn't limited to spaces. It’s how I think in most areas of life.

When I mentor startups, I help founders model their business ideas like systems—with inputs, outputs, feedback loops, and optimizations. When I build brands, I structure them around core values, clear customer paths, and scalable frameworks.

And when I design a room, I’m not just filling it—I’m orchestrating flow, utility, and intent.


Why It Works (At Least for Me)

Systems bring clarity. They help reduce decision fatigue. They ensure every part has a purpose. Whether it’s a workspace or a go-to-market plan, when I can “see the system,” I know I’m on the right track.

That’s probably why I find designing interiors so therapeutic—it lets me create harmony from blankness, order from openness.

Perhaps it’s the engineer in me. Perhaps it’s the builder in me.
